Old Howell Mountain Trail is an approximately 2.5 mile section of former vehicle road that is being transitioned into a multi-use non motorized trail for outdoor recreation. Beloved by local cyclists, hikers, and nature enthusiasts, this scenic trail provides sweeping views and a nice bit of exercise.

The Old Howell Mountain Trail is a newly converted road-to-trail project. This has historically been a vehicle road, but after multiple landslides was abandoned by the County of Napa due to the impractical repairs that would be necessary to maintain it for vehicular traffic. The Napa Open Space District has assumed management of this trail and is working on improvements to the amenities available at the northern parking area as well as trail amenities, signage, and mapping.

Over time, this trail will be allowed and encouraged to naturalize and will eventually lose most of it’s “roadlike” qualities, becoming more of a natural surface walking/riding trail. Please be aware of changing trail conditions over time as this process evolves.
