Moore Creek Park includes 1,600 acres of rugged terrain including Oak woodlands, Douglas Fir & Madrone forest, grasslands, and chaparral. Wildlife in the park is plentiful, including large mammals such as black bears, mountain lions, bobcat, gray fox and coyote.
Prior to its acquisition by the Napa Open Space District in 2008, the 700 acre Moore Creek Unit was a privately owned cattle ranch. The 900 acre Hennessey Unit consists of water-shed land purchased by the City of Napa when it developed Conn Dam and Lake Hennessey in the 1940’s. The lake was named after Edwin R. Hennessey, a Napa banker who helped secure local development of the reservoir when an earlier Federal flood control project stalled.
Moore Creek Unit
The Moore Creek Unit is North of the main parking lot and offers miles of trails for hiking, cycling, and equestrian use. The trails on this unit offer beautiful views down the canyon and shaded walks along Moore Creek itself. There are several crossings along the Moore Creek Trail and during high water periods creek crossings may be difficult or impossible depending on the water level. While there may be boards or tree trunks that can assist in crossing the creek, they can move around and are not guaranteed to be stable. Creek crossings should be approached with caution and are to be used at your own judgement and risk.
Lake Hennessy Unit
The Lake Hennessy Unit is South of the main parking lot and can be accessed by the Chiles Creek Trail from the parking area. This unit offers stunning views of the Lake Hennessy watershed as well as the lake itself. Trail users can choose between trails up the rugged ridges, or a flat walk along the lakeshore.
The Napa Open Space District regularly sponsors volunteer work parties at Moore Creek to build and repair trails, re-move invasive plants, and restore habitat. If you’re interested in volunteering click here.
